Under the weather? Know where to go this bank holiday

Doncaster people are being encouraged to prepare for the Summer bank holiday break (31 August) by making sure they’re aware of what services are available if they become ill or injured.

Dr Nick Tupper, chair of NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the long-weekend but realise that sometimes people can become injured or fall ill. It’s important that everyone understands what services are available should they need them, giving them access to the, quickest, most appropriate treatment.”

While some GP surgeries will be closed, the out-of-hours service – which operates when surgeries are closed – will be available for those who need to see a doctor urgently.

If you need a repeat prescription check now to ensure that your supplies will last until at least Tuesday 1 September.

The Minor Injuries Unit at Mexborough Montagu Hospital will be open to treat minor burns, cuts and wounds, infections and rashes.

Health advice is also available 24 hours a day by calling NHS 111, and the town’s 8am to 8pm health centre- based at The Flying Scotsman Centre – will also operate as normal, scheduling appointments.

Real dental emergencies are rare. Most conditions can wait until the next working day when your dental practice will be open, however if you experience facial swelling, trauma or pain that cannot be controlled by over the counter medicine then you should contact 111 for advice.

It’s also useful to keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet so you can deal with any small scrapes and illnesses that occur in the holiday period.

Choosing the right service means that you will receive the right treatment and also allows busy NHS services to  help the people who need it most.

Kate Carville, Head of Nursing and Quality for the Emergency Care Group at Doncaster Royal Infirmary said: “Thank you for choosing alternative services for non-urgent care and freeing up the Emergency Department for patients who are very sick or seriously injured.”
