NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are encouraging people to check their current medication before Christmas Eve and take stock to see if they have enough to last over the holiday period and into the New Year.
While most pharmacies and GP surgeries will be open throughout the Christmas week, the majority will be running reduced hours and closed on Christmas Day, bank holiday Monday and New Year’s Day.
Harry Singh will be one of the few pharmacists that will be working on Christmas Day, at the East Laith Gate branch of Weldrick’s Pharmacy, which opens from 10am to 8pm.
Harry said: “We want to ensure anyone with long-term health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, lung and heart disease, enjoys the holiday period and doesn’t run out of their medicines. However, if you do need us, there will be a small number of pharmacists available, like myself, to give advice and dispense those vital medicines throughout Christmas day.
“It only takes a few minutes to collect some over-the-counter remedies for winter ailments. If you take regular medications, please ensure you check you have enough left to cover the holiday period. Make looking after your health part of your Christmas preparations and don’t leave it until the last minute!”
The CCG also wants to remind people what to do if their GP practice is closed. The Doncaster Same Day Health Centre will be open from 8am to 8pm on Christmas Day if you need to see a doctor and is available on 01302 123 3103, in addition to the GP Out-of-Hours Service which can be contacted by ringing your practice’s number and operates all day.
Dr Nick Tupper, NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) Chair, said: “At this time of year, with only a week before Christmas, people will be focused on getting organised to make sure they can make the most of the holiday period. It is important not to forget about those other ‘essentials’ such as prescription medicines. Make sure to plan ahead of time.”
A lot illnesses and symptoms can be treated in your home by making use of a well-stocked medicine cabinet and by getting plenty of rest. Keep essential medicines such as: aspirin, paracetamol, anti-diarrhoeal medicine, cough medicine, plasters, thermometer and antiseptic cream.
The following pharmacies will be open on Christmas Day: Balby Late Night Pharmacy, 8am to 12pm, Day Lewis Pharmacy in Thorne, 10am to 4pm and Weldrick’s on East Laith Gate, 10am to 8pm.
