Making the most of the Minor Injuries Unit this Easter

D11_510 Montagu signs 05Doncaster residents are being urged to get their scrapes, sprains and broken bones treated at the right place to help relieve pressure on the Emergency Department ahead of the Easter break (25 to 28 March).

The Mexborough Montagu Minor Injuries Unit is staffed by trained health professionals who can treat a wide range of issues such as minor burns and scalds, infected wounds, sprains, cuts and grazes. Staff can also examine and treat superficial injuries to the eyes and ears and also arrange X-rays for suspected broken bones.

Last month, NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) launched a survey asking local residents what they did the last time they were ill or injured. The results showed that of all respondents who sought help at Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s Emergency Department, over 50% could have attended the Minor Injuries Unit for the same treatment.

Mexborough resident, Daniel Outram, hurt his foot after taking an unfortunate tumble down the stairs during the festive period. Suspecting a fracture, Daniel went to Montagu Hospital where he received prompt treatment.

Daniel said: “I managed to fall down the stairs when moving presents on Christmas Eve and landed badly on my foot. I limped on for a few days but as the swelling got worse, especially around one of my toes, I decided to go to the Minor Injuries Unit.

“I was seen very quickly and the nurses fixed me up in no time. Although badly bruised the X-ray showed that nothing was broken, thankfully. Ordinarily, I would have gone to the Emergency Department for something like this, but at the Minor Injuries Unit I was seen within five minutes and back home within an hour.”

Open 9am to 9pm every day of the year (except Christmas), the Minor Injuries Unit can often offer faster treatment than the Emergency Department and specialises in treating household knocks and scrapes.

David Purdue, Chief Operating Officer at the Trust said: “Easter holidays are traditionally a time when we see increased attendance in the Emergency Department. It is very important that you get the most effective care at the most appropriate place, leaving emergency services to those who need them urgently. If you have suffered a sprain, strain or suspect a broken bone, the Minor Injuries Unit can offer swift and effective treatment, allowing you to get back to enjoying the long weekend.”

The Minor Injuries Unit at Mexborough Montagu is open from 9am to 9pm seven days a week (except for Christmas Day), with no appointment required. The service is located on Adwick Road in Mexborough, S64 0AZ. Telephone: 01709 585171.
