Got a hospital appointment? – please keep, cancel or rearrange it

WE’VE teamed up with Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to remind patients with an appointment to ‘keep, cancel or rearrange it’.

The Trust is unfortunately in the worse 25 per cent in the country when it comes to patients not showing up. Every year an average 50,000 appointments are missed there – some 140 a day.

It mirrors the national trend of around 10 per cent of all NHS appointments not being kept, which is costing the NHS millions of pounds.

NHS Doncaster CCG Chair Dr David Crichton said: “It’s disappointing that, for whatever reason, patients are missing out on opportunities to see the experts who can help them.

“Healthcare staff are ready and waiting, so please look after yourself and your local NHS by keeping, cancelling or rearranging your appointment.”

Emma Challans, Deputy Chief Operating Officer at the Trust, said: “Making sure you attend your hospital appointments, or rescheduling if it is not possible, is vitally important.

“Often cancelled without prior notice, missed appointments have a knock-on effect within the organisation, taking up time within clinics which could be used to see, care for, and treat other patients.”

Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s ophthalmology service has one of the highest non-attendance rates, with above 8,000 missed appointments each year. To help understand why, over the coming weeks visitors to the Fred and Ann Green Eye Centre will be asked for feedback on missed appointments and how the Trust can assist patients in cancelling or rearranging appointments.

HealthWatch Doncaster staff will also be talking to local residents to try and find out why patients are missing their turn. Andrew Goodall, the organisation’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We are excited to get out and about talking to people in Doncaster and its surrounding areas to understand why people miss their appointments, and what we can do to improve the situation.
