With August bank holiday weekend just around the corner, it’s important to know where you can get health care and advice should you need it over the long weekend.
As the weekend is longer than usual the opening hours of dentists, GP surgeries and pharmacies are different. NHS Doncaster CCG wants to ensure that when people are unwell they get the right service at the right time so they can get the best possible treatment.
Whilst some health and care services will be open as normal, some will be closed – but don’t worry, you can still access a range of health and care services.
We are focusing information on and around four key areas:
- Ensuring people have enough medication to last them over the Bank Holiday period, reducing the need to ask for an emergency repeat prescription;
- Providing information in an easy to understand format so people know what services are available for their health and care needs;
- Promoting the ‘Doncaster Choose Well App’, enabling smart phone users to access the appropriate and nearest services to their home address and
- Publishing a full list of all pharmacies that will be open over the bank holiday period in the Doncaster area.
Dr David Crichton, local GP and Chair of Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group said: “As another long weekend approaches, it’s important once again to guide people to use the right service for them and their family’s health and care needs. Over bank holiday periods, Accident & Emergency and hospital departments get extremely busy, we continue to see some people attending who don’t know where else to go when usual services are closed.
“Visiting your local pharmacy, calling 111 or the Same Day Health Service can potentially save you time and prevent an unnecessary journey, as well as making the difference for hospitals to treat those with more serious conditions or injuries in a timely manner.”
During bank holiday periods GPs see an increase in the number of people requesting regular repeat medication urgently because they have run out. If you do take regular prescribed medication, it is important to ensure you have enough to cover you for the extended period when your GP Practice may be closed.
In the event that you do run out of prescribed medication, please contact your local pharmacist or NHS 111 who can assist you with an emergency supply.
