Doncaster area village to keep its popular GP practice

A DONCASTER area village is to keep its popular doctor’s surgery thanks to a nearby practice making a successful bid to take over the running of it.

The New Surgery, based at Adwick Road, Mexborough, will start providing care  at Barnburgh Surgery on Wednesday 9 May, 2018, when the current contract holder – Dr Karen Wagstaff – leaves.

Dr Wagstaff said: “I would like to congratulate The New Surgery, as I have done in person. I hope they will enjoy Barnburgh and I am happy that the service to patients will continue.”

Dr Paloma Rodriguez, one of four GPs based at The New Surgery is promising a ‘seamless’ transfer for the 2,900 patients registered at Barnburgh.

She said: “Dr Wagstaff has done an amazing job and we want to continue her good work.

“We already care for patients living in Barnburgh and the surrounding villages and now look forward to leading a new future for healthcare in the area.”

Working alongside the new GP at Barnburgh Surgery will be a first contact practitioner and a new practice nurse.”

The New Surgery, which has around 7,500 patients and has been operating on or near its current site for more than 50 years, will not be affected by the acquisition of the contract for Barnburgh Surgery.

NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group has managed the detailed tender process to ensure that a surgery continues to operate in Barnburgh.

The organisation’s Chair, Dr David Crichton, welcomed the successful outcome, saying: “We advertised not just nationally but internationally to find a successor practice and in the end the solution came from just a few miles away in Mexborough.

“We wish staff at The New Surgery, and all their patients, well for the future.”
