As part of the Doncaster winter campaign, Stephen Emerson, Head of Mental Health Commissioning at Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group and Debbie Smith, Chief Operating Officer, at Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber (RDaSH) NHS Foundation Trust outline the importance of support for people with mental health needs and where they can turn to for support and advice.
For many people, winter and the festive season can bring increased levels of anxiety and stress, and for others it may make feelings of loneliness, sadness and isolation worse.
It’s important to know there is always someone to talk to and to seek help when it’s needed.
There are a number of options available for everyone in Doncaster to seek advice, information and support relating to your general health and wellbeing. Even during the Christmas and New Year period itself, there is always a GP available and these options can be found on Doncaster CCGs website.
However, if you are suffering from anxiety, stress or depression, in the first instance you should try and speak to your GP. If you need help or support out of hours, call the out of hours GP number 0300 123 9990.
In an emergency situation, where you or someone you know has concerns about their immediate mental health, you should call the RDaSH Crisis Team, 01302 566999.
In Doncaster, there are a number of specialist mental health staff working in the local Emergency Departments who support hospital staff and offer advice and support when adults and children are admitted.
We can assess these patients and offer a range of different support, depending upon their individual needs. This can include one-to-one support and counselling, group support and access to our Talking Therapies service.
Another alternative is to call The Samaritans, free of charge, on 116 123. However, if anyone has actually harmed themselves they should attend their local Emergency Department immediately.
There are also a number of national helplines that offer support, a list of useful links can be found in the ‘Support and advice’ section of the RDaSH website.
So, please do not feel that you are on your own or isolated during the winter period.
There are a range of services and options for all your health and care needs – whether you need an appointment with a GP early morning, late evening, at the weekend or out of hours or you need to attend the Same Day Health Centre, Urgent Care Centre or specialist mental health support, there is a service for everyone.
Visit Doncaster CCG’s website for more information about how you can look after yourself and others during the cold winter months and how and where to access services if you are unwell or need to discuss your health and wellbeing.
Help us help you – stay well this winter.
