Care to Chat on Carers Rights Day

Doncaster CCG supporting Carers Rights Day on Friday 30 November

On Friday 30 November 2018, Carers Rights Day, staff at NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group are being invited to ‘care 2 chat’, as part of Doncaster Council’s support for carers. The Council has given the CCG a ‘Care 2 Chat’ bag, full of information and leaflets outlining the support available here in Doncaster for carers.

In Doncaster there are more than 33,000 carers and 19,229 of these carers are women. Caring for a loved one, a friend or neighbour can be a very rewarding experience. However, it can also be extremely isolating and carers may feel isolated, depressed, anxious and vulnerable. Combining caring with working can also cause stress.

Make sure your GP Practice is aware if you are a carer and ask to go on to their Carers Register. As a Carer you are entitled to a free flu jab; make sure you get yours this winter. Further information about how we can help you stay well this winter can be found here.

-3 in 5 people will become carers at some point and 30% of carers have experienced a drop of £20,000 a year or more in their earnings as a result of their caring responsibilities.

-32% of carers have to cut back on food and heating.

-45% of carers say their financial situation has a negative impact on their health.

-1% of carers are worried about the impact of caring on their relationships with family and friends.

Every day 6,000 people become carers, but often it’s not something we’ve planned for. On Carers Rights Day we’re focusing on supporting people to prepare for the future through our theme: Caring for Your Future. The aim of Carers Rights Day is to:

  • Make carers aware of their rights
  • Let carers know where to get help and support
  • Raise awareness of the needs of carers

Carers UK has issued a new research report which shows that unpaid carers are facing increasing strain on their finances the longer they are caring.

The study shows that just two in five (44%) of those caring for more than 15 years could afford their bills without struggling financially, compared with three in five (62%) of carers in their first year.

Carers who have been caring for over 15 years were twice as likely to report having been in debt as a result of caring compared to those in their first year of caring. A copy of the Report is available here.
