The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives anyone a general right to request information held by public authorities such as the NHS.
The aim of the Act is to create a climate of openness in public services and to inform people how public authorities make their operational decisions and how public money is spent. Much of this information, such as board papers, policies, and financial transactions, is already available in our Publication Scheme.Our Publication Scheme follows the Information Commissioner’s Office template format, storing information in the following six classes:
- Who we are and what we do
- What we spend and how we spend it
- What our priorities are and how we are doing
- How we make decisions
- Our policies and procedures
- Lists and registers
We aim to publish as much information as we can through our Publication Scheme. If you can’t find the information that you are seeking, you may wish to make a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.
Anyone can make a request under the Freedom of Information Act but requests must:
- be in writing;
- state your name;
- include a postal or email address so we can write back;
- describe the information you want – please try to be as specific in your request as you can to help us to identify the information which you require.
We will respond to your request within 20 working days of receipt. Where we refuse a request we will fully explain our reasoning and what course of action is open to you. For more information about exemptions under which we may refuse a request, please see the Information Commissioners website here
We don’t routinely charge for requests made under FOI, or for any information supplied within our publication scheme. If we think the cost of collecting the information you’ve asked for is more than £450, (which is the same as 18 hours of staff time) we can say that due to this, we can’t provide the information. If there is a cost associated with your request, we will let you know and this will need to be paid before any information is provided.
