The Spinal Group includes representatives from Primary Care Doncaster, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS FT, Healthwatch Doncaster, Doncaster CCG and Chapman’s Physio.
Working with Healthwatch Doncaster, in collaboration with patients, the group is focussing on access to community based services for low back pain.
As part of this the group will pilot increased access to First to Physio sessions based at The White Wings Centre in Askern.
Patients in the North of Doncaster can be directly referred from First to Physio into the Back Active exercise classes. By piloting this increased access in the first instance we are gathering information about patient experience of services and whether they are having a positive impact. In the longer term this information will help us to decide whether it would be beneficial to open up the service to the wider Doncaster population.
In addition, the team are developing a patient leaflet and guidance for Doncaster GPs on managing lower back pain and sciatica in those over the age of 16. The development of this leaflet is being supported by patients and members of the public that have expressed an interest in being involved.
The hospital is also looking at their use of Spinal Injections in the management of lower back pain and whether other care and treatment options may be better for some of their patiients.
