Stoptober is back – take this opportunity to quit smoking

Stoptober is back for its eighth year to help smokers across the country quit for good.

More than 1 million people have already been spurred on by Stoptober to successfully end their relationship with smoking. And if you smoke, there is support for you as well.

Doncaster is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country and the number of people that smoke is higher than the national average. That’s why we are supporting Stoptober to help promote the health and wellbeing benefits of quitting.

The Yorkshire Smoke Free service is one of those free, support services that can help you quit and is run by NHS experts who will support you to make that life changing decision.

There are so many benefits of stopping smoking, some of these include:

  • in just 24 hrs, the poisonous carbon monoxide will have left your body
  • your risk of cancer, heart and lung disease is reduced
  • your general fitness will improve
  • you will improve your fertility levels and your chance of a healthy pregnancy and baby
  • you will save money
  • the appearance of your skin and teeth will improve.

Dr David Crichton, local GP and Clinical Chair, NHS Doncaster CCG said: “There are so many benefits to not smoking; it’s one of the most important things you can do to maximise your health and wellbeing, and not just for you, but for your family as well.

“Stoptober provides an opportunity to highlight the wide range of support, hints and tips to help quit smoking. People create their own quit plan, often with like-minded people who plan to quit and need a bit of support and inspiration.

“If you need to speak to someone in person to help you on your journey, contact the Yorkshire Smoke Free service or speak with your local practice – they will be able to support you or point you in the right direction.”

Linked to Stoptober is Doncaster’s Targeted Lung Health Check scheme which will be available to eligible 55 to 74 year olds in the coming months. Earlier this year, NHS England announced a pioneering scheme to detect lung cancer earlier, along with other conditions such as asthma and COPD.

The aim is to detect cancer earlier, making it easier to treat and help improve health outcomes. Further information about the scheme and how it can be accessed will be available soon.

Leaflets, posters and information are available in all practices in Doncaster, as well a number of pharmacies.

Community and voluntary groups in Doncaster are also asked to support the campaign by accessing and downloading free resources:

  • Graphics and images
  • Leaflet
  • Posters
  • Digital banners and screens adverts

The campaign runs from 19 September until the end of October 2019.
